Fatherlessness - Documentary
My aim with this project was two fold: highlight the topic of ‘absent’ fathers in young girls, and to help young girls find language around this topic. My personal belief is that fatherlessness is often spoken about in relation to young men, leaving out half of the others who are impacted by this issue.
For this documentary I interviewed women from my own circle, in order to combat ideas of taboo and shame. Growing up I didn’t confide in anyone, so directly involving my peer group for frank conversations felt important to me.
It is my hope with this documentary was to aid young women in finding language to help them articulate their own experience, whether they resonate with what the contributors are saying or not. By having another experience to hold a mirror against it you are able to (hopefully) begin to understand where you stand.
